Many people know exactly what they want to do with the rest of their life but may lack the skills or experience to land that perfect job. To get that "perfect" job you may have to gain some experience through volunteering. Volunteer Calgary is the place to go for guidance on volunteer opportunities around our city.
If you would like to get involved with an agency that has an Aboriginal focus, there are several associated with Volunteer Calgary. They include the Awo Taan Native Women's Shelter and Our Lady Queen of Peace. Many other member organizations have hidden influences from the Aboriginal community. For example, even though the Discovery House opens its doors to anyone who needs help, many of the clients are Aboriginal. It is a good idea to visit Volunteer Calgary's website on our 'links' page and research the different agencies to find which one is right for you.
Everyone can be a volunteer, unfortunately not everyone takes the opportunity. Volunteer Calgary encourages all people to become a volunteer because each individual contributes something special and unique to the community.
Volunteer Calgary's membership includes many non-profit organizations throughout Calgary. It is the goal of Volunteer Calgary to "build a community that provides leadership in volunteerism." In order to achieve this goal, the centre provides services to the public about volunteer options through advertisements, interviews and a computer self-referral system.
Anyone can stop by and take advantage of the resource library, training sessions and workshops offered at Volunteer Calgary. A useful resource is their online database that lists volunteer positions for over 450 non-profit member agencies.
Whether you want to volunteer as an individual or in a group, Volunteer Calgary has something to offer everyone. You can contact the office to make an appointment with a Referral Advisor; or call the Customer Service Representative at 265-5633. For more information contact Chris Foster, Manager, Volunteer Services, at 231-1440.
