The Aboriginal Education Program (AEP) at Mount Royal College is a College/University Entrance Preparation Program (UCEP) for students of Aboriginal ancestry. The AEP Circle of Advisors, in co-operation with Mount Royal College Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension, administers the Aboriginal Education Program. The program is designed to meet the needs of Aboriginal students who are preparing to pursue either a College or University education. It is not designed for GED preparation, or High School equivalence and it's not an apprenticeship program.
The program currently offers four levels of study designed for students requiring advanced upgrading with concentration in Math and English. In addition, the core subjects are supplemented with general arts and science courses, college preparation and Aboriginal cultural courses. The inclusion of Aboriginal cultural content and support services is an integral part of the Aboriginal Education Program. All levels are supported by tutorial services, academic and personal advising, social events and visits from community members.
The Program Objectives are to meet the educational needs of Aboriginal peoples. To promote a culturally appropriate educational program which enhances the educational experience of Aboriginal people. To enhance cross-cultural understanding within an institutional setting. Lastly, to provide a positive learning environment which promotes success. The Admission Criteria include the following; Aboriginal ancestry, minimum age of 20 years old. A successful completion of grade 9 (or better) through high school or upgrading programs. Successful completion of the College Placement Test in English and Math, lastly, submission of official transcripts from upgrading or secondary institutions.
