Born to Be Aboriginal Youth Program

The Born to Be Program is not currently available. Watch this page for future announcements, as we offer it periodically throughout the year.

Attention all Aboriginal youth! If you are ages 15 to 24 and are First Nation, Status, Non-Status, Inuit or Metis you can participate in the Born To Be program.

The City of Calgary Youth Employment Centre hosts the "Born To Be" Aboriginal Youth Career and Living Skills Program. This is a full time 20 week program consisting of 10 weeks of living skills and 10 weeks of work experience. You have the choice of participating in just the life skills or work experience segment, or even better, BOTH!

Youth can expect to take part in the following:

  • living skills and self awareness
  • pre-employment training
  • work experience
  • recreational activities (You could take part in forming the first all Aboriginal youth Dragonboat canoe team for next Spring!)
  • cultural activities
  • and much much more...

Participants will receive a living allowance, bus passes, daycare assistance, and those youth who successfully complete all 20 weeks receive a $500 bonus!!

Play the MP3

The song 'Born to Be' from the 'Peaceful Nation" CD by artist Sandra Sutter was born the night before it was needed for a graduation ceremony honouring young people graduating from the City of Calgary 'Born to Be' program. Inspired by the young people who were working towards a better life for themselves and for their families.
