Aboriginal Futures

The Aboriginal Futures Career and Training Centre provides Urban Aboriginal people with training, education and employment services. The goal is to assist Aboriginal clients to become self-reliant and self-determined members of society through the workforce.

The process involved in becoming a client is simple and straight forward. Phone the centre at (403) 253-5311 and book an appointment with one of their Career Counsellors. The employment services offered at AFC&TC range from one to one career counselling to applications for a wage subsidy program. In between clients have access to an employment resource room with job postings, employment and training information. There is a great selection of information about resumes and cover letters, and clients also have access to a computer lab for job search on the internet. There is also a photocopier, fax machine and telephone. The wage subsidy program is in partnership with Treaty 7 Economic Development Corporation. For more information on this program read the wage subsidy aticle.

Some of the educational services offered at the centre include applying for individual funding for education and training. There is a resource room with information on the various educational institutions in Calgary plus Aboriginal Scholarships and Bursaries. AFC&TC has partnerships in place with the SAIT Pre-Trades program and the Bow Valley College Aboriginal Programs.

The centre also has a Microsoft Office Skills Training program (MOST). With the technological advances of today, employers are looking for employees that are computer literate in a wide variety of computer software programs. Clients receive current and relevant computer skills and the MOST program is designed by Computer Training Professionals Inc. Other workshops that are prevalent at the centre are Resume Writing and Career Planning. Aboriginal Futures also partners with various organizations and industries to provide specialized training when needed.

To access all these great services give Aboriginal Futures Career and Training Centre a call or visit them at #200 - 6011 1 A Street SW which is a short distance from Chinook LRT Station. Their phone number is (403) 253-5311 and remember that all their services are FREE.
